PREVIEW: Being a Man

The last post here was on the subject of valor, virtue and manly courage. If you don't think that these words are losing their meaning, try googling images of any of these words and see what you get.

The article above, a book review by Christina Hoff Sommers, who wrote The War Against Boys, is just wonderful in furthering our discussion. In fact, this topic is the underlying reason for the name of this blog: Loin Girders. It is my contention that masculinity has been driven underground, to dark places, when rather it should ascend to the bright high places of human virtue. If we can recover it, at its center, at its best, we will find a spiritual foundation in Jesus Christ. Let's look at this together by interacting with this article. You game? Gentlemen, gird your loins. Post.

I think there's a fine line between a fella being chivalrous and an assumption that women are the "weaker sex" in need of our protection.

Inasmuch as we can be chivalrous and not denigrate women, I'm fine widdit. I open doors for folk (men, women and children), try to be aware of others' needs and tend them, etc.

But to do so in such a way that makes the other feel lesser rather than better would be, dare I say, ungallant.

On the other hand, all this preening about "manly men" leaves me cold. Methinks some protest too much.

    Dan,

Did you follow my suggestion and look up some of the images that google carries under virtue, valor, manliness? Does it bother you that these words, in our lifetime, have weakened and nearly disappeared? Does me.

The weakness of men in society right now is legion. Men graduate from high school at a lower rate than women, are less likely to go to college or graduate school, less likely to graduate from college or graduate school. I'm interested in why men are weak, and if they are weak. I believe that a feminized society has created a hostile environment for them nearly everywhere. Yes, I'm on a crusade.

    Hey Dan,
Can you tell me how you put that cool photo up there to the right of your posts? I see that nearly everyone has figured this out but me. I'd like to do it, too.

This is Dan, I'm having trouble logging on, for some reason:

Yeah, I've figured it out and forgotten.

    It looks like if you
    1. go to blogger.com
    2. sign in
    3. get to your "dashboard" page
    4. over to the right, there is an "edit profile" option
    5. one of the options is for a "photo url"

All of which you probably know.

    6. paste in a url for a photo. This is the part where I don't remember where I got my url, but it is similar to your photos that show up in your blog (photos1.blogger.com...booger.jpg)

Does that help or am I just telling you stuff you already know?
